Alexandrite is June’s birthstone and one of the rarest gems in the world. This amazing gem likes to play tricks on the eye. It will change colors in certain kinds of light. Alexandrite will appear green by daylight and will become purple to red under incandescent light sources. The transformation is very exciting to watch as different sources of light change the color of the stone.
Compared to other gemstones many natural Alexandrite are smaller in size. Usually you will see sizes ranging from 1.5mm to 4mm. This is due to the rarity of the gemstone.
If you are looking for a larger sized Alexandrite that will fit your budget there are lab created Alexandrite. These gems are grown in a lab as opposed to being mined from the earth. Both the natural and the lab created change color when the light source is changed. The lab created gemstones are less expensive per carat than the natural Alexandrite.
